Africa Does Not Need to Be Explained to Itself

Kabelo Chabalala · 5 February 2026 · 6 min read

On telling continental stories to continental audiences, without the export framing.

Much of the communication produced on this continent is written outward — to investors, to donors, to a foreign desk editor imagined somewhere else. The framing shows. Achievements arrive translated, contextualised and slightly apologetic.

There is a different and more powerful register available: speaking to the people the work is actually for. It changes the vocabulary, the proof points and the choice of platform. It also happens to travel better.

Confidence is not a tone of voice. It is the decision about who you are addressing.
