Media Literacy Belongs in Every School Hall

Young South Africans are the most connected generation in our history — and the least equipped to interrogate what reaches them.
In school halls across the country, we ask learners a simple question: how do you know that is true? The room usually goes quiet. Not because the answer is difficult, but because nobody has ever asked them to formulate one.
Media literacy is often framed as a defence against misinformation. It is also a civic skill. A learner who can trace a claim to a source, distinguish opinion from reporting and recognise an incentive is a better citizen and, eventually, a better employee.
The intervention does not require budget or technology. It requires time in front of young people and adults who take their questions seriously.
